I wanted to give my thoughts on my own submission (and I would welcome other participants to do the same if they like) but I wanted to wait until the voting was done so nothing I say influences any votes in either way. I think the voting is still going(?), but I feel most people who are going to vote have already voted. And I'm afraid if I wait any longer I will forget to do this entirely, so here we go:
It's been about five years since I wrote a Swat Kats fanfic, and a good many years more since the one before that. I was not planning on writing one, but then this contest came out. I had a little plot seed that I had been squirreling away and the contest's topic fit the idea. I still almost didn't participate because I started a month late, but I'm glad I did. It felt great to write about Swat Kats again; something comforting and familiar. This is the first time I have entered a fanfic contest so I even spent way more time and attention with words and sentence structure than I usually do and that, too, was an enjoyable experience.
I honestly wasn't expecting the kind of relationship that I ended up having with this story. It haunted me at night, keeping me awake and excited, much like Jake during the construction of the Turbokat. In the end, this didn't just end up being a short story, but a kind of love letter to the show and its heroes. (I caught myself a few times nearly waxing poetic. I'm a huge dork.) This story was a near cathartic experience for me and I enjoyed every moment of it. If it didn't win a single thing in the contest, I wouldn't mind at all. I feel like I already have my prize.
A big thank you to MoDad and anyone else who made this contest possible. Without it, I wouldn't have this story under my belt. Another big thank you to anyone who took the time to read my story. I know we all are busy, I know it can take a lot sometimes to make the time to sit down and read all these awesome entries. Thank you for your time and attention. Thank you to my fellow writers/entrants. I think we all gave each other some good competition and some great reading.
