Talk about the most awesome show in the world, SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron.

Megakat City looks quite like a near-future city, similar to Empire City in the 1985 cartoon COPS.
Sorry to be so pedantic, but C.O.P.S. is actually from 1988. As for the main question, I'm going with 1993 myself, and I'd love to ask the Tremblays about the calendar thing.

Well... do they use the Gregorian calendar starting with Jesus' birth? :P

Maybe they use something more accurate, like the Solar Hijri calendar for calculating the year.

Or maybe I'm over-analyzing things and it really just is in 1993. Yeah, that's probably it.

Christmas is mentioned, so I assume so.

I'm assuming that they just used the same calendar everybody else uses for the sake of convenience.

This is all giving me an idea. I'll have to share it later on. ;)

To estimate the era in which a series is made, I prefer to focus on the everyday technology, and not on the one used by the heroes and villains: there are many series from the '90s, such as X-Men or Spiderman, that seemed to be contemporary to their time of transmission, but had more advanced technology... at least in the military branch.

From that perspective, there are two possibilities:

- The series takes place in an era contemporary to its broadcast, i.e. during the first half of the '90s.(1993-1995)
- The series takes place in the near future from the perspective of the time of transmission: it could be the years 200X for example.

Personally, and for reasons of convenience in order to be able to adjust it to certain crossovers I do, I opt for option 2, developing the series between 1999 and 2002. It is an almost intermediate time between the '90s and our present time, closer to the '90s, and where the Internet was not yet what it is now.
