Chaos in Crystal: Fan Script

Post by Kooshmeister » Sun Jun 30, 2019 9:36 pm

I promise that after The Giant Bacteria and The Doctors of Doom, this'll be my final fan rewrite of an existing episode/script. But I've left my second such script, Chaos in Crystal, unfinished with one act left to go for several years and I've decided to not only finish it, but also refine it (although I promise I won't tinker with it as much as I have The Giant Bacteria over the years), in preparation for novelizing it like I did the other two. Being added in (here and elsewhere) is the new character of Slammer, the prison guard captain, and a few other changes here and there.

"Chaos in Crystal"

LOGLINE: A flawed diamond-mining machine turns criminal Rex Shard into a gigantic crystal colossus, granting him the power to turn all he touches to crystal!

ACT I

FADE IN

EXT. MEGAKAT DESERT - DAY

A vast, arid desert. For a moment, all is silent. Then... Whoosh! The Turbokat flies into view!

T-BONE
(V.O.)
Nothin' like a desert test run!

In the cockpit, T-BONE is at the controls, RAZOR behind him.

T-BONE
We should do this more often, buddy!

He flies the jet around some. Up, down and all around, grinning ear to ear.

RAZOR
T-Bone, may I remind you we're here to test MY missiles, not YOUR flying.

T-Bone pretends to pout, but can't suppress his smirk.

T-BONE
Aw, but I'm havin' fun!

RAZOR
You can do tricks after we're done!

T-BONE
Yeah, after we prove these things are duds!

Razor grumbles.

T-BONE
What? Come on, Razor, I know you're real... "creative" when it comes to missiles, but I got my doubts about these babies. 'Specially the screamin' ones.

He sticks his pinky into his ear and wiggles it around inside, grimacing.

T-BONE
My ears still hurt from that noise they make.

RAZOR
(chuckles)
Sometimes creativity is our best weapon. Not everything can be solved with just a regular missile that goes "boom." I think Feral proves that every day.

T-Bone flies into a deep canyon that lies up ahead.

EXT. MEGAKAT CANYON - DAY

A long, deep-throated canyon with natural stone arches over it at irregular intervals. T-Bone flies the Turbokat through the crevasse, which is wide enough to admit the jet's wings in most places. Where it isn't, T-Bone turns the Turbokat on its wing and flies sideways through tighter spots. He seems to be enjoying himself, unable to resist, and intentionally picking areas of the canyon that are more difficult to navigate, to show off his impressive piloting skills, the walls of the canyon a blur beside them in the cockpit as the jet rockets past. Razor just sighs and shakes his head.

RAZOR
Okay, now, get ready, 'cause the first set of drones is comin' up!

T-BONE
Roger.

Set up on a natural arch a few yards ahead are a trio of tank robot drone vehicles, each armed with a top-mounted laser cannon. They open fire as the Turbokat approaches. Explosions fill the air. T-Bone is momentarily alarmed.

T-BONE
Razor, I thought you said no live ammo!

RAZOR
Just keepin' you on your toes, buddy! Besides, it wouldn't be a real test without SOME danger!
(smirks)
Deploying Slicer Missiles!

He fires three Slicer Missiles, which unfold into huge cutting blades and pass through the tank drones like jelly; after amoment the tanks collapse into evenly cut pieces. T-Bone raises an eyebrow, impressed.

T-BONE
Okay, I gotta hand it to ya, there, Razor, those things did pretty good.
(doubtful)
Still not sure about the screamers, though.
(grins)
My turn to have some fun again!

He passes over the archway, blowing the sliced remains of the tank drones off with the jet's backwash, and does a barrel roll underneath an archway to avoid a huge outcropping. As the Turbokat zooms past, we see some smallish winged flying target drones, three in all, arranged under a ledge. They activate and rocket off in pursuit of the jet.

In the cockpit, the SWAT Kats hear a beeping sound.

T-BONE
Heads up, buddy, three bogeys closin' fast!

RAZOR
That'll be the other drones. Banshee Missiles, deployed!

Two Banshee Missiles are launched facing rearwards from the jet and zoom towards the pursuing drones. Their fronts emit high-pitched sonic waves that shatter the foremost drone. It explodes in midair. However they overshoot the remaining two drones and crash into the supports of the natural archway; it collapses into the depths of the canyon. Razor frowns.

RAZOR
Crud. One outta three. I gotta work on their guidance system.

T-BONE
I told ya.

RAZOR
(smirks)
They sound cool, though.

T-Bone glowers and rubs his ear again, remembering. They're still fleeing from the remaining two drones, which fire lasers at them. T-Bone flies up and out of the canyon, the drones in hot pursuit.

T-BONE
Eh. Nothin' beats a plain ol' ordinary missile.

RAZOR
Speaking of which...!

He activates a button, and two regular missiles that have "From Razor With Love!" stencilled on their sides fire back and hit the drones dead center, destroying them.

RAZOR
Woo! Maybe sometimes "the old-fashioned way" is better, T-Bone.

T-BONE
Come on, let's head home. I got a craving for a tuna fish sandwich.

RAZOR
But first, we clean up our mess!

T-Bone sighs but nods and the Turbokat banks away and begins head back the way they came.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - DAY

Mayor Manx's limo approaches the main gates of a heavily fortified prison with huge stone walls and guard towers sitting near the desert highway. Armed GUARDS in wide-brimmed "Smokey Bear" hats glower down with laser rifles. One turns and yells down inside.

PRISON GUARD
Comin' in!

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - COURTYARD

The gates open and the limo drives through into the courtyard. We see numerous blockhouses with barred windows where the inmates are kept. The gates close behind the limo as it pulls up the brutalist-looking administration building, where it's awaited by WARDEN CYRUS MEECE and three prison guards. Meece is a fat fellow in a tacky purple suit, with a gray crewcut and a neatly-trimmed mustache. The meanest-looking guard with him is CAPTAIN SLAMMER, a gaunt, stone-faced individual whose features look like they've never been lit by a smile in his life.

The limo stops. Meece approaches as the CHAUFFEUR gets out and opens the door. MAYOR MANX and CALLIE BRIGGS exit the vehicle. Manx looks impatient.

MANX
This is the third one today...!

CALLIE
(placating)
Come on, Mr. Mayor. You have to do the yearly prison inspections...

MANX
(dejected)
But all on the same day?

CALLIE
It's the last one. Besides, you said so yourself...
(holding up a finger and quoting)
"The faster we get this over with, the faster you can tee off."

Manx brightens a bit. The chauffeur shuts the car door as Manx and Callie walk to meet Meece.

MEECE
Good afternoon, Mayor Manx. How nice of you to come down and pay us a visit.

He and Manx shake hands. The Mayor moves to shake Captain Slammer's hand, but the glowering corrections officer emphatically doesn't accept. Manx jerks his hand back as though bitten.

MANX
(clearing his throat and trying to sound "official")
Ahem! Well, you know I have to make these yearly inspections of all the prisons, Warden Meece.

MEECE
Then I'm sure you're going to be impressed with what you see.

He turns and the three head off, followed at some distance by Slammer and the two guards.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - BLOCKHOUSE

The group walks down a cell block. There are rows and rows of cells with PRISONERS in drab gray uniforms.

MEECE
Megakat Maximum Security Prison lives up to its name, Mayor. We're the most secure prison in all Megakat City.

MANX
(sounding bored)
Yes, indeedy!

A few of the prisoners hoot and holler and give Callie a few "kat-calls," but she ignores them; pure, cool professionalism. Slammer is of a different persuasion. His guards give the misbehaving inmates a few whacks on the knuckles with their nightsticks where they grip the bars as they pass the cells behind the group.

SLAMMER
Knock it off, you hooligans! We got us a lady visiting!

They pipe down. The tour continues without incident. Manx is still bored out of his skull and makes a point of repeatedly checking his pocketwatch, unimpressed with what he's seen so far.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

Now the group, sans their guard escort, although Slammer is visible in the hallway through the open door, is in Warden Meece's office on the second floor of the administration building. It isn't very big but it is strikingly opulent and luxurious in comparison to the rest of the facility. Wood-paneled walls, a large oak desk with a gold inkwell, a plush, rich, deep carpet, some "tastefully" nude classical paintings, and a statue of a beautiful she-kat drawing water.

DR. LEITER GREENBOX, a young inventor in a rumpled shirt and tie wearing glasses, is sitting in one of the plush armchairs reserved for visitors in front of the desk. Callie frowns at how out of place all this wealth seems.

Ignoring Greenbox, she goes to the window. There are three. One immediately behind Meece's desk with a view of the courtyard, and one to either side of the room. Callie approaches the window to the right of the door. Down below, we can see prisoners, supervised by guards, working around a storehouse that abuts the main building. They're pushing covered wheelbarrows of something in through a big loading door. She clears her throat.

CALLIE
The prison certainly seems to be in great shape, Warden. How are you able to keep it up on the sadly meager budget you have? Especially after all the budget cuts made to compensate for rebuilding the Megakat Tower?

Manx looks up from his watch and frowns at the mention of the Megakat Tower.

MEECE
Well, my little side project sees to that. If you'll follow me...?

The three exit the room, Manx pocketing his watch. Greenbox rises to follow.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - COURTYARD

They're back outside now. Meece leads Callie and Manx with Dr. Greenbox trailing behind to the prison storage house Callie saw from the window: a single-story, gray brick building that sits alongside the main building. Meece approaches the smaller door beside the big loading one. An armed guard stands alongside it.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - PRISON STOREHOUSE

Opening the door, Meece enters followed by Callie and Manx, revealing boxes and boxes of glittering diamonds. Manx and Callie's eyes widen in astonishment. Dr. Greenbox lingers in the doorway, smiling, hands stuffed into his pants pockets. The prisoners being supervised by the guards are adding more diamonds to the collection; each wheelbarrow has its cover removed to reveal more of the gemstones, which the inmates tip into the boxes.

MEECE
We use prisoners to mine the nearby mountain for precious diamonds. We keep them here until we ship them out to dealers, who in turn pay us the money we use to fund the prison.

They walk among the tows of boxes as the prisoners finish up, pushing the empty wheelbarrows out, followed by their guards. NOW the Mayor is interested. Everywhere he and Callie look are diamonds, diamonds and more diamonds. In closeup, we see the boxes of gems reflected in the lenses of their glasses. Callie picks up a diamond between her fingers, examining it. She has her "suspicious face" on.

CALLIE
But I thought those old mines were dried out.

MEECE
They are, as a matter of fact.

CALLIE
(surprised)
But then how did you get the diamonds?

Dr. Greenbox approaches them. Meece claps him on the shoulder.

MEECE
I think he's the one who can best answer your question, Deputy Mayor. Let me introduce you to Dr. Leiter Greenbox. Thanks to this genius, diamond production is going to triple!

GREENBOX
(smiles)
You mean thanks to the Gemkat 6000!

CALLIE
The what?

Greenbox reaches into his pocket and produces a folded-up piece of paper, which he unfolds into the blueprints for some sort of machine, spreading them out on a table.

GREENBOX
It's an experimental mining device contracted by the prison.

MEECE
And right now, a workin' model of this baby is being used up at the mines.

Manx leans over to study the blueprints, frowning. His enthusiasm is gone as he studies the extremely detailed machine. It's roughly the size of a household vacuum cleaner and the schematics indicate it has a clear compartment built into the side for storage.

GREENBOX
It uses a high-velocity laser beam to heat rocks to the point of crystallization. Basically, about a million year's worth of nature's work in about a few seconds.

MANX
(doubtful)
Eh, looks complicated...

CALLIE
Is it safe?

GREENBOX
(chuckles)
As long as you use it correctly, Deputy Mayor. Fortunately, it's very simple to use.

We see another shot of the blueprints for the device, closer this time. The camera orients until the Gemkat 6000 on paper is lined up evenly as we:

FADE OUT/MATCH TO:

EXT. DIAMOND MINE - DAY

A built version of the Gemkat 6000 in the hands of convict REX SHARD. Shard is big with white fur. Obviously older and ugly, with a nose that looks like it's been broken more than once in the past, he nevertheless has an impressive bodybuilder's physique from a lot of time spent in the prison exercise yard. He shirtless, showing off his broad chest and hard abs, a pair of goggles worn up on his forehead. For work purposes, he is isn't shackled.

He's flanked by two guards. TALON (NOTE: no relation to the Enforcer sergeant!) is obese and surly-looking, and LEM is thin and more laid back, wearing a pair of 80s-style sunglasses with rectangular slit in either solid plastic green lens (think Bebop from "Ninja Turtles"). Both are holding prison-issue laser rifles.

TALON
(pointing at the device)
It's really easy to use. Even a pinhead like you can use the Gemkat 6000 without a problem!

Shard fixes him with an angry stare.

SHARD
What kind of a fool do you take me for?

TALON
(smug)
The kinda fool serving a nine-life sentence!

The huge con turns to regard him. It's obvious Talon enjoys needling Shard and angering him, likely as an excuse to retaliate. He's a bully through and through. Lem interjects.

LEM
But the Warden's willing to talk to the parole board about shaving some time for using that stupid thing.

He points at the Gemkat 6000. Shard spits at the ground.

SHARD
(disgusted)
The Warden? Cyrus Meece is the only one gettin' rich off this mine!

The mining machine has a shoulder strap. Shard slings it over one shoulder and then turns and trudges into the mine.

SHARD
(over his shoulder)
And don't get any uglier while I'm gone, fatso!

That does it for Talon. He balls up a fist and takes a step forward.

TALON
Hey, you hood! Come here and say that to my face!

Lem, the other guard, holds his partner back, a hand on his shoulder.

LEM
Easy there, Talon. He's not worth it.

INT. DIAMOND MINE

Shard proceeds deeper into the mine, lugging the Gemkat 6000 and muttering to himself. He approaches the wall of the mine.

SHARD
So, this little gizmo mines a day's work's worth of diamonds in seconds? Gimme a break!

Unslinging the device, he pulls his goggles down over his eyes and turns the machine on, and it hums to life in his hands. To his surprise, a bright green beam shoots out of the front, boring into the rock.

SHARD
(amazed)
Wow... I take it back.

Closeup of Shard as we see the bright green lights reflected in the lenses of his goggles.

SHARD
Let's see what this baby can do!

The immediate area around where the beam penetrates the rock begins to crystallize. As if magnetized, a horde of diamonds is suddenly sucked up by the beam, clunking noisily into the clear fiberglass storage compartment on the Gemkat 6000's side. It then automatically shuts off and beeps three times, signalling that it's full. Shard, puzzled, lifts the drill up to peer into the storage compartment.

SHARD
Dang! That Doc wasn't kiddin'! This thing's full already! Wow, a guy could get rich overnight with this beauty.

He lifts his goggles up and turns to look back down the tunnel. From his P.O.V. we can see Talon and Lem standing at the entrance a good distance away, laughing and talking to one another inaudibly. Their vehicle, a van, is visible for the first time from this angle further behind them.

A smirk suddenly crosses Shard's face. Taking off his goggles, he kneels, setting the mining machine down. He starts attempting to open the compartment with the diamonds.

SHARD
I think I'll take a few off the top before that crud Meece and his crud partner do!
(straining as he struggles with the compartment)
Then I'll take care a' dumb and dumber out there and be on my way to freedom before you can say...
(grunting as he strains harder)
Before you can say... Rrrr! Drat!

After taking a moment to scratch his chin in thought, he grabs a rock. He hesitates, but then...

SHARD
Aw, what the heck.

He brings the rock down onto the device hard. Crack!

EXT. DIAMOND MINE - DAY

The two guards are still standing vigil at the entrance. Lem checks his wristwatch (a "Roarlex").

LEM
What's takin' him so long? He should be done by--

He stops short as the ground rumbles and suddenly a huge explosion rocks the mountainside, and the mine explodes forth a bright, dazzling light, diamonds and other gems and jewels and belching out smoke and chunks of rock and clouds of dust. Talon and Lem, turning, are thrown forward through the air several feet. They tumble head over heels in the dirt. Talon's hat flies off and they both lose their guns. Lem's sunglasses are askew.

As they climb wearily to their feet, coughing, the dust settling, Lem suddenly points.

LEM
Look!

Talon follows Lem's pointing finger and looks over to see that the mine entrance is now rimmed in multi-colored crystal. The tunnel beyond is a swirling confusion of multi-faceted reflected surfaces as deep into the mine as the guards can see. A silhouette appears. Slowly, he steps forward into view, standing just inside the entrance of the mine. It's Shard, but not the Shard who went in! The entire right side of his body is covered in green-tinted crystal!

Looking pained, terrified and confused, Shard shakes his head and brings his right hand up to examine it, gasping.

SHARD
(shocked)
What's happened to me?!

LEM
(to Talon)
Run! Get the van!

Talon hurries towards an armored prison van parked a few feet away, on loan from the Enforcers. The big gold "M" logo is on the hood.

Lem turns to face Shard. Shard, growling, looking for somebody to take out his anger on, strides towards Lem. The guard nervously adjusts his sunglasses, smoothing his uniform out.

LEM
Hey, take it easy!

As Shard gets closer, Lem starts backing up. He holds his hands up defensively as the angry convict's shadow falls over him. Behind him, we see Talon getting into the van and slamming the door.

LEM
We'll get you some help! W-We'll get you to Doc Greenbox! He'll know what to do!

Shard growls and seizes Lem by the front of his shirt, lifting him up off his feet. There's a blinding flash and Lem screams. His scream rises in pitch and becomes inhumanly high-pitched and echoey before stopping completely, as suddenly the guard is "crystallized" in Shard's grip, solidified into a frozen, lifeless crystal "state" held aloft by the partially transformed prisoner!

In the van, Talon looks back at his partner and Shard through the rolled down driver's side window. Lem's scream still reverberates off the surrounding mountains. It slowly fades.

TALON
(horrified)
Lem!

If Talon is surpsied by what he's witness, Shard is equally taken aback! His anger leaves him, replaced by puzzlement. He sets Lem down, the guard standing upright, "frozen" in position mid-struggle. Shard taps his shoulder a few times. It makes a "ting ting" sound. Totally solid crystal.

Experimentally, Shard stoops down and picks up a rock in his diamond-hand. It too turns to solid crystal in his grip. Starting to like where this is going, Shard tosses the rock aside, moving past the "frozen" Lem, and walking towards Talon.

Yelping, Talon fumbles for the keys, dropping them. As Shard approaches, Talon frantically rolls up the window, positively terrified.

SHARD:
Goin' somewhere, there, Talon?

Talon finds the keys and inserts them into the ignition, just as Shard's crystal fist smashes through the glass, and Talon screams as Shard grabs his shirt sleeve. There's a bright flash as we cut to:

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - COURTYARD - DAY

Mayor Manx's limo sits parked in the courtyard. The chauffeur holds open the door as Manx and Callie Briggs approach, with Warden Meece walking alongside them. Dr. Greenbox stands nearby, hands stuffed in his pockets.

MANX
Sorry I have to rush off, Warden, but there's urgent matters that need my immediate attention!

CALLIE
(sotto to Meece)
The Manx Invitational Golf Tournament.

Meece gives a small laugh, Manx frowns, having overheard.

MANX
(smirking)
But, the Deputy Mayor can continue the tour, right Callie?

Callie sighs.

CALLIE
Right, Mayor.

Warden Meece gives Callie a sympathetic look as. Manx gets into the limo and the chauffeur shuts the door after him, before running and getting in himself.

Callie turns to say something to Meece just as Captain Slammer comes running up.

SLAMMER
Warden, something's goin' on up at the mine! I can't reach my men!

MEECE
Sounds like trouble!

Overhearing, Greenbox comes running over. Manx rolls down his window.

MANX
Trouble?
(nervous little laugh)
Why, Deputy Mayor Briggs is my favorite troubleshooter. She can handle it.
(under his breath)
Handle it, Callie!

The window rolls up as the limo pulls off. Meece and Slammer exchange "Can you believe this guy?" type looks as Callie just glares at the departing limo. The prison gates open for it.

GREENBOX
What's going on?

MEECE
Nothing serious, Dr. Greenbox.
(to Callie)
Probably just radio trouble.

GREENBOX
If it involves my Gemkat 6000, you can bet it's serious!

Callie thinks things over a moment. We hear the gates shut after the departing limo.

CALLIE
Warden, I want to take Dr. Greenbox and have a look up there for myself.

GREENBOX
Sure, we can take my Jeep.

MEECE
Why that'd be just fine, Ms. Briggs. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some things to take care of in my office.

He and Captain Slammer walk off towards the administration building. Callie looks at Dr. Greenbox, who smiles cheerily.

GREENBOX
Ready when you are.

EXT. DESERT HIGHWAY - DAY

The long white limo drives down the otherwise completely deserted road. Manx, in back, fidgets impatiently.

MANX
Oh, do hurry! I don't want to be late for tee off!

CHAUFFEUR
(exasperated)
Don't worry, sir. Megakat Springs is only twenty minutes away.

He floors it.

EXT. MEGAKAT DESERT - DAY

The Turbokat flies along across the great, seemingly endless desert, the SWAT Kats still on their way home. T-Bone is grumbling.

T-BONE
We'd be home by now and I'd have a tuna sandwich in my tummy if someone hadn't insisted we clean up our mess in the canyon...

He takes his eyes off his flying long enough to shoot an angry glare over his shoulder into the jet's backseat.

T-BONE
We're pilots, note junkmen.

RAZOR
Now where have I have heard that before?
(chuckles)
Hey, buddy, picking up after ourselves is pretty important. Especially out here where there are not junkmen.

He holds up a finger for emphasis.

RAZOR
Even the SWAT Kats have to try and leave as little of an impact on the environment as possible.

T-BONE
(grumbling some more)
Yeah, especially without Feral and his goons to do it for us like you said.
(conceding)
Oh well, at least the cleanup went faster than I thought it would. I guess if we clean up main street, Manx'll give us a parade.
(frowns)
Say, that phony-haired phony's promised us at least two parades by this point. I haven't seen any ticker tape or confetti or "Thank you, "SWAT Kats" floats, have you?

Razor laughs.

RAZOR
Oh, come on, T-Bone, that kinda grandstanding isn't why we--

Razor stops and looks at his console as it starts beeping frantically.

RAZOR
The scanner's picked up a really weird kind of electromagnetic disturbance southeast from here.

T-BONE
Yeah, and my guidance systems are are going wacko!

He taps a gauge or two. His scanners are blinking crazily.

RAZOR
Well, I'm tracking it. It's movie. Due southwest.

At this, they turn and look out the cockpit plexiglass in that direction.

T-BONE
What's that way...?

RAZOR
The Megakat Maximum Security Prison.

T-BONE
The big one. Won't hurt to head over and take a look. It's only five miles away.

The Turbokat changes course, heading southwest.

RAZOR
(playfully jeering)
What happened to getting home as fast as possible, huh, T-Bone?

T-BONE
Hey, buddy, I dunno about you, but I smell adventure...!

EXT. ANOTHER PART OF THE MEGAKAT DESERT - DAY

Rex Shard walks through the desert, still half crystal, striding towards the prison in the distance.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - DAY

Two guards are on sentry duty on the ramparts of the high walls near the gates. One of them, sitting on the edge of the wall, turns as he spots the figure approaching across the dunes, wavering, mirage-like. He frowns, resting his laser rifle against his knee, visoring his eyes under the brim of his hat with his hand.

PRISON GUARD #1
Who's that?

The second guard squints, shifting position, raising his gun a bit. The mirage solidifies into reality. However, he isn't close enough for the guards to recognize that the right of his body is green crystal; they can only tell he looks hurt.

PRISON GUARD #2
(realizing)
It's Rex Shard! Hurt! Hurt real bad, I think!

Shard crosses the highway that runs in front of the prison, walking right up to the front gates. The two guards point their laser rifles down at him but don't open fire. Yet.

PRISON GUARD #1
(shouting down)
Give yourself up, Shard!

He keeps coming, ignoring them.

PRISON GUARD #2
Stop right there or we will fire!

SHARD
Take your best shot!

They open fire, laser bolts pelting the ground and bouncing off Shard's crystallized right side. One shot grazes his left arm, and he growls in pain, but otherwise is indifferent to the guards' efforts to put him down.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - DAY

Standing in the parking lot over by the administration building, Callie and Dr. Greenbox are walking towards a green Jeep fitted with a rollbar. Dr. Greenbox's vehicle. They stop at the sound of laser fire.

GREENBOX
What the--?

Captain Slammer comes running out of the front entrance of the administration building behind them.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - DAY

Shard steps fully up to the gate now. The guards aren't firing anymore, having finally noticed just what is wrong with the partially-crystallized convict. They stare down in silent, openmouthed shock. A third guard joins them. Shard's crystal hand touches the gate, closing his eyes. He concentrates. Mere seconds later, there's a brilliant flash of light.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - COURTYARD

Callie and Greenbox jerk back in surprise at the huge burst of light shining from the opposite side of the wall. They shield their eyes.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - DAY

A "flow" of crystal spreads from Shard's hand over the doors, the walls, and up into the ramparts, crystallizing everything. Two of the watching guards are instantly turned into crystal like Talon and Lem. The third leaps screaming from the top. A crystal "wave" flows down the wall in either direction. More and more stunned guards are either transformed along with it or elect to jump. The exertion of using his power on something so big has caused Shard to become fully crystal now, a hulking, brutish cat made entirely of glittering jade-colored gemstone. He opens his eyes, solid yellow, and withdraws his hand. The entire length of the prison's front wall is a giant glittering fifty foot perimeter made of brittle crystal.

SHARD
I'm comin' for you, Meece!

Reeling back his fist, he punches the crystal gate, shattering it. Bits of crystal fall inward.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - COURTYARD

Shard enters the courtyard area through the big hole he just punched. Callie and Greenbox are good distance from Shard, but can still tell he's no ordinary kat. Callie gasps. Greenbox's eyes widen. They reflexively step back. Alarms are going off. Captain Slammer steels himself up, turns and runs inside.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

Warden Meece is glued to the window, eyes widened at the events occurring outside. Two guards stand behind him. He pulls himself away from the window and hurries over to his desk, grabbing the phone, hurriedly dialing a number. The guards rush from the room.

MEECE
(into the phone)
This is Warden Meece! Get me Commander Feral at Enforcer Headquarters! And fast!

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - COURTYARD

Most of the guards are too scared of Shard to try stopping him, and run away as he strides towards the main building. Over by the parked cars, Callie and Dr. Greenbox still stand in wide-eyed shock. Callie finally moves, and grabs Greenbox's arm.

CALLIE
Come on! We've got to warn Warden Meece!

GREENBOX
But--!

He's cut off as she drags him along, the two of them running towards the main building.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

Meece is still on the phone, sweating, panicky now.

MEECE
(into the phone)
Yes, a mining accident! T-Tell Commander Feral to send someone over here pronto!

Suddenly the line goes dead! Meece looks at the receiver in disbelief, then setting it down on the desk by the cradle, unlocks the bottom drawer of his desk, taking out a laser pistol. This in hand, he runs to one of those expensive-looking paintings and knocks it aside, revealing a hidden safe! Hurriedly, he begins turning the dial. Opening it with a clank, he begins taking out stacks of $100 bills wrapped in rubber bands and stuffing them into a handy briefcase.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY

Callie and Greenbox rush down the richly wood-paneled hallway, passing the two guards who've just come from Warden Meece's office.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

Callie and Greenbox litterally burst through the double doors of the office, startling Meece. Wads of bills go flying everywhere.

CALLIE
Warden, there's--

Screaming, Meece blasts away with the laser pistol he took from his desk drawer. Callie and Dr. Greenbox leap to the right to avoid the blast and all the terrified Warden manages to accomplish is shooting up his own doorframe. He stops after seeing who it is. Callie holds up her hands, trying to calm the panicky Warden down.

CALLIE
Whoa, whoa, whoa! It's us!

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - HALLWAY

On his way to the Warden's office, Shard encounters Slammer and the two guards from before. The Captain has a truncheon out, teeth gritted. The other two guards are likewise armed.

SLAMMER
(afraid but determined)
You're going to have to get by us...

SHARD
Easy, peasy...

With a growl, Slammer lunges, swinging his truncheon. Shard grabs his wrist, catching his blow. Slammer gasps and in a flash of light is crystallized. Shard releases him and Slammer is left stuck in mid-swing. The other guards look terrified but stand their ground.

SHARD
(snerks)
...one...

Moving past Slammer, Shard approaches the other two guards. Guard #2 swings, his truncheon banging uselessly off of the crystal convict. He stagger, stunned. Guard #1 tries his hand, but his weapon deflects as well. Guard #2 redoubles his attack, and yelps as his truncheon cracks in two.

SHARD
...two...

He grabs a guard in each hand, pinning each against the wall. They writhe and contort and turn into crystal. They remain standing frozen in mid-struggle as Shard lets them go.

SHARD
...threesy. Heh, heh, heh.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

The armed Meece is still sweating and profusely apologizing to the two people he almost shot! He's standing in the middle of the room, towards the door; Callie and Greenbox are facing him, away from the door.

MEECE
S-Sorry, Ms. Briggs! I thought you were...

He trails off, eyes widening in horror as he sees something behind the other two, taking a step back. Dr. Greenbox himself looks like he wants to be anywhere other than here, while Callie is torn between asking about the money that's currently scattered all over the floor and getting everyone to safety. She opts for the latter, taking charge.

CALLIE
I'd ask what you were doing with all of this money, but we've got more important things to worry about! We have to--

MEECE
(choked)
Too late!

Greenbox turns and gasps. The sound also makes Callie whirl, eyes widening behind her glasses as Rex Shard steps into the room. All three normal kats back away from Shard as he enters the room: Callie and Greenbox to the right side, by the window overlooking the storehouse, and Warden Meece up against his desk, still clutching his personal sidearm in shaking hands.

SHARD
(mock apology)
Sorry, am I interrupting?

MEECE
W--Who are you?!

SHARD
Rex Shard, the latest sucker you got to use Greenbox's stupid little device! Well, it was flawed! It blew up and did THIS to me!

He walks right towards Meece, hand outstretched.

SHARD
And now I'm gonna do it to you!

With a cry, Meece blasts away with the laser pistol, but all his shots bounce harmlessly off of the approaching crystal criminal's torso. Upon seeing how little effect his fire is having, he stops, letting the gun fall from trembling hands.

MEECE
(trying to bargain)
Now, now, Shard! I--I'm sure we can work this out!

SHARD
Work THIS out!

He grabs Meece by the front of his suit, lifting him up into the air, turning and holding him towards Callie and Dr. Greenbox, kicking and struggling. There's a flash, and as Callie and Dr. Greenbox watch, horrified, Meece turns to crystal!

Shard sets him down, but he is frozen in such a position his feet aren't right, and he teeters, then falls over, hitting the floor and smashing to pieces. His head, intact, rolls across the plushly-carpeted floor and stops at Callie and Greenbox's feet. Callie gasps, covering her mouth. Greenbox looks like he's going to be sick.

SHARD
(laughs)
Aw, how clumsy of me.

He now eyes the inventor with malicious intent, hands on his hips.

SHARD
Now, Doc... let's you and I talk about my "magic touch."

He takes a few threatening steps towards Callie and Greenbox!

ACT II

FADE IN ON:

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

The crystallized disembodied head of Warden Meece lies on the floor. Rex Shard steps forwards, his foot crushing the crystal head underfoot as he approaches a terrified Callie Briggs and Dr. Greenbox. They back closer and closer towards the window that overlooks the prison storehouse. Suddenly, Greenbox holds up a hand.

GREENBOX
Wait! I can help you!

The crystal criminal pauses, as though confused by the offer.

SHARD
Help me...?

GREENBOX
Y-Yes. All I have to do is get the Gemkat 6000 and--

Realizing what the inventor means, Shard balls up his fists angrily, growling.

SHARD
No! No I don't wanna be "helped!" Not like that! I don't wanna go back to bein' a nobody!
(grins evilly)
Naw, Doc, what you're gonna help me do is figure out how to control these new powers a' mine, so I can rule this burg, see?

Callie looks horrified at this prospect. Greenbox splutters, trying to get a word in, but Shard cuts him off savagely.

SHARD
And you are gonna help me, or else you're gonna end up like HIM!

Without turning around, he points at the shattered pile of broken crystal that used to be Warden Meece. Greenbox swallows, and Callie makes a terrified little choking sound. At this, Shard turns and eyes her, as though noticing her for the first time.

SHARD
Or maybe her...

Callie is torn between standing up to this bully, deadly crystal touch or no deadly crystal touch. Greenbox tries to find his spine, timidly putting himself between the villain and his intended victim, shaking his head back and forth in a wordless gesture of negation. But Shard's already made up his mind. He strides forward again. When he lifts his foot, the crushed bits of the crystallized Warden's head tinkle off of his sole onto the carpet.

SHARD
Yeah! Yeah...

He moves to elbow Greenbox aside, confident that it's only his hands that turn things to crystal; Greenbox, who isn't so sure, makes a tight little sound in his throat and deftly hops aside, pressing himself against the wall, his courage leaving him as he watches the convict turned monster approaching the defenseless Deputy Mayor.

SHARD
Maybe you need another up close and personal demonstration of just what it is I can do...

Callie stifles a scream as that glittering emerald hand reaches for her throat!

SHARD
...and then maybe you'll agree to--

Whoooshhhh! The roar of jet engines, muffled by the office walls, fills the air, halting Shard in mid-sentence. Seeing something over Shard's left shoulder, all the terror leaves Callie's face, replaced by joyful recognition. Dr. Greenbox sees it, too, a look of pathetic relief coming over him. Shard spins around. From his P.O.V., we see the Turbokat in VTOL mode hovering outside the window at the opposite end of the office.

SHARD
(surprised)
Huh? The SWAT Kats?

Blap-blap-blap! Slugs from the cement machine gun shatter the glass of the window, sail across the office, and smack Shard right in the chest! Callie leaps aside as the crystal criminal flies back, smashing through the window that overlooks the storage house.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - DAY

Shard falls down towards the storage house roof.

SHARD
Aaahhhhh!!!

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - PRISON STOREHOUSE

Shard crashes right through the roof of the storage house, landing in a crate of diamonds.

SHARD
Ow!

He lies there, dazed.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

Callie and Dr. Greenbox look down through the smashed glass at the hole in the roof below. Then, Callie hurries over to the other side of the room, standing by the other shattered window. Outside the window, the canopy of the Turbokat pops open, revealing T-Bone and Razor.

CALLIE
I am SO glad to see you guys!

T-BONE
Hey, Ms. Briggs! What are you doing here?

CALLIE:
(chuckles)
Yearly inspection of the prison! It was either this or golf, and you know how I feel about golf!
(turning serious)
Anyway, we've got a big problem!

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - PRISON STOREHOUSE

A groggy Rex Shard sits up amongst all the diamonds. Suddenly, they all fly right to him, attaching themselves to his crystal body as though magnetized, and with a bright flash of light, they become fused with him, creating another layer of unbreakable crystal! The end result is that Shard just keeps growing and growing with each new additional later. And nobody is more surprised than him!

SHARD:
Uh? What the--?!

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

Greenbox still stands by the window overlooking the storehouse. Over his shoulder, we see more and more bright flashes come through the hole in the roof. Callie comes over to stand beside him.

CALLIE:
Dr. Greenbox, what's happening down there?

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - DAY

A dazzling rainbow of colored light engulfs the storehouse as it is turned into crystal from within, the result of the rapidly growing villain within getting bigger and bigger. The roof suddenly explodes as a fifty foot Rex Shard erupts from within! He towers over the entire prison as debris and diamonds rain all over the place! Cut to T-Bone and Razor in the Turbokat, eyes and mouths wide open in shock.

T-BONE
Oh, boy. I think that's Callie's big problem!

RAZOR
Looks like it just got a heckuva lot bigger!

Shard towers over the prison. He is momentarily taken aback, but then laughs heartily.

He crosses his crystal arms as he looks down at the tiny Turbokat.

SHARD
So, it's the famous SWAT Kats, come to challenge the mighty Rex Shard, eh? Well, take your best shot! Rex Shard is bigger and badder than ever! There's nothing I can't handle! Nothing!

He reaches down to grab the Turbokat.

T-BONE
(annoyed)
It's gonna be one of those days!

He watches the huge hand whipping down. Despite his immense size, Shard is fast.

T-BONE
Hang on!

Jerking the stick, he closes the canopy and banks left hard, the hovering Turbokat reverting to normal jet mode and quickly zipping out of reach. Shard may be fast, but T-Bone is faster.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - MEECE'S OFFICE

Callie and Greenbox jump as the giant, crystal hand that missed the Turbokat takes the roof off! Debris - normal chunks of concrete, wood and insulation as well as glittering bejeweled crystallized versions of the aforementioned - rain down upon the two kats inside. Warden Meece's expensive furniture and artwork takes a pounding as the crystalline chunks hit them. Callie grabs Greenbox's arm, and they run from the office before the entire ceiling caves in.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - HALLWAY

Callie and Greenbox run down the hall, passing the two crystallized prison guards standing forced up against the wall and crystallized form of Slammer, still standing in mid-swing of his truncheon. The building rumbles around them. Slammer teeter-totters, but manages to remain standing despite being frozen in a position of motion. Another "wave" of transformation caused by Shard's touching the administration building's roof "flows" down the walls, ceiling and floor of the hallway, pursuing the fleeing Callie and Dr. Greenbox, who make it to an emergency stairwell door.

INT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - STAIRWELL

Callie throws open the crashbar, kicking off her high heels as she goes, and races down, two, three steps at a time. A panting and bug-eyed Dr. Greenbox is right behind her. As the door automatically swings closed, it is crystallized in a bright flash and the transformation which is consuming the building follows them in here, too, coming down the stairs after them! Reaching the landing, the two actually leap the last set of steps, landing hard and painfully on hands and knees, then run towards a door marked "EXIT."

EXT. MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - COURTYARD

The Turbokat zooms across the partially crystallized prison courtyard, flies over the wall as though retreating, then turns to circle back. As they do, we see the emergency exit door on the side of the administration building flung open and Callie and Greenbox run out, turning to watch as the entire structure, with Shard towering above it, turns into crystal. Watching in the Turbokat, the SWAT Kats wince and shield their eyes from the bright, flashing light of the effect.

RAZOR
Holy kats! What does this guy have, a mineral Midas touch?!

The crystallization spreads to the blockhouse where the cells are. In seconds, that has been converted as well, and Shard stands over the now almost fully transformed, but mostly intact, prison like a kid gloating over his sand castle at the beach. The storehouse is completely destroyed, in total shattered ruins around his feet; aside from the smashed roof representing where Warden Meece's office used to be, though, the administration building is intact, and so are the blockhouse. They glitter, eerily beautiful, like glinting works of twisted cut glass artwork under the hot desert sun. Only most of the courtyard grounds and the perimeter wall remain untouched.

Growling, Shard takes a step forward. His enormous foot kicking chunks of what used to the the storage building in all directions. Callie and Dr. Greenbox duck as the foot passes over them and bits of debris land around them. They're so tiny to him he doesn't notice them. Yet. He's completely focused on the Turbokat which is racing towards him at top speed. Razor grits his teeth.

RAZOR
I don't like this Mr. Shard's attitude...

T-BONE
Then let's polish some crystal!

Razor flips a few buttons, firing some ordinary "From Razor with Love" missiles. These explode harmless against Shard's chest. He grunts, more in annoyance than pain, and turns as the jet zooms past him, trying to grab it, missing, but accidentally discovering another ability: as he swats at the tiny aircraft, the claws on the tips of his fingers flash, and the claws grow into four glittering, razor-sharp crystal spears and fire after the retreating Turbokat.

SHARD
(surprised)
Whoa! Didn't know I could do THAT!

He is delighted. Laughing, he repeats the gesture, sending a barrage of the projectiles right at the Turbokat this time.

T-BONE:
Whoa!

T-Bone banks right, barely avoiding the sharp crystals. They fly past and crash into the prison walls (now long abandoned by the surviving guards), bring them down in a tumble like breaking glass. Crrrrrash! As all this is happening, Callie and Dr. Greenbox rush into the parking lot. It is one of the few areas of the prison grounds that remains untouched. A few cars are left, including Greenbox's green Jeep and what we take to be Meece's expensive-looking luxury car.

CALLIE
You said you could help him back there! Can you?

GREENBOX
Maybe, but first we have to have the Gemkat 6000, and then we need to get back to my lab!

CALLIE
Then let's go!

They jump into the Jeep, Callie in the driver's seat, and speed off across the prison courtyard. Shard takes his attention off the Turbokat long enough to see that it's them in the Jeep.

SHARD
Where do you think YOU'RE goin', Doc? We still got business to discuss! Like you helpin' me control these powers!

He strides after them. Looking in the rearview mirror, Callie's bare foot floors it towards the crystallized front gate with the massive hole Shard punched through it back when he was regular-sized. Shard seems to completely forget about the SWAT Kats, and goes stomping after the Jeep.

EXT. MEGAKAT MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - DAY

The Jeep comes flying through the hole in the gate and gets a ton of air like the Jeeps in The Rat Patrol, hits the asphalt hard and goes careening wildly down the short front driveway, tires screeching. Callie stops at the bottom of the drive long enough to ask:

CALLIE
Which way?

GREENBOX
Take a right!

Callie starts driving again and swerves the Jeep, nearly tipping over, and zooms off down the road, the way Manx's limo went earlier, toward the town of Megakat Springs. The fifty-foot Shard reaches the prison perimeter wall just then, looming over it, and growls angrily. He prepares to step over the wall to pursue them when suddenly the Turbokat buzzes him, flying past his fast.

T-BONE
Oh, no, you, don't, sucker! Ya gotta finish us first before you can lay your ugly hands on Callie!

Shard is enraged at this defiance, swatting at the jet, flinging more of his deadly crystal claw spears. T-Bone dodges them relatively easily, although the last one grazes the hull, leaving a big scratch, angering Razor. He hates "dings" and "dents" of all kinds. As his partner banks around for another pass at Shard, he flips a switch on the weapons panel, and the cement machine gun lowers down from the undercarriage. Bap-bap-bap-bap! The blobs of cement hit Shard in the face, obscuring his vision. He stands for a moment, shoulders hunched in silent, searing rage, and we have expect a "womp womp" sad trombone sound effect to play as he holds up a sign like Wile E. Coyote! Instead, he claws at the hardened cement, cracking and crystallizing it, freeing himself from it. It all falls away, and he then performs an unusual move: he leans back and flexes.

Rex Shard was a pretty well-built guy before but now he's positively truly "chiseled," and as he flexes his literally rock-hard pectorals, a pair of whirling razor-edged crystal "buzzsaw" discs come shooting out of the narrow cleave. Despite the impressiveness of the maneuver, the discs fail to find their target. His rage only increasing, Shard finally steps over the wall, leaving the prison grounds.

EXT. DESERT HIGHWAY - DAY

Shard stands in the middle of the road with the prison behind him. He roars and shakes his fists at the Turbokat, which is coming 'round for a fourth pass. Razor frowns, consulting his instruments. Select some Slicer Missiles, he fires them.

RAZOR
I'm gonna cut you down to size, big fella!

Chink! The blades break against those enormous pecs and the missiles themselves explode into useless shrapnel. Razor gives a little yelp. Shard isn't even fazed. In fact, he starts laughing!

SHARD
What's the matter, SWAT Kats? Can't "cut it?"

He guffaws at his own stupid joke.

T-BONE
Great, he isn't just a giant monster that talks, but he's got a bad sense of humor, too.

RAZOR
Just your kinda guy, then, huh?

T-Bone shoots him an annoyed look.

RAZOR
Swing around, we'll have to try something else!

T-BONE
Like what?
(realizing)
Oh, no, not those stupid Banshee Missiles!

He palms his face.

RAZOR
Their guidance systems may not work, but I bet their sound'll shatter Shard like a big pane of ugly green glass!

He starts tap-tao-tapping on the control panel as T-Bone circles around for a fifth pass at the monster. Suddenly:

TALON
(over the radio)
Back off, SWAT Kats!

T-Bone and Razor glance to their left. From around the corner where the road winds around a small mountain, in the direction of Megakat City, a group of about five Enforcer Peacekeeper tanks come into view, catching the giant Shard's attention. Riding atop the lead tank is SERGEANT TALON. In lieu of his customary peaked cap, he's wearing a commander's helmet with a mic and the Enforcers' "M" logo on it, similar to Feral's.

TALON
The Enforcers are here!

The tanks come to a halt a few yards in front of Shard outside the prison. Although he's a little taken aback that the normal-sized crystalline monster he was sent to deal with is now fifty feet tall, Sergeant Talon is Sergeant Talon and takes this, and the bizarre condition of the nearby prison, with his usual casual air of disinterested confidence. His expression doesn't change. Shard looks down at the little column of tanks.

SHARD
Oh, look! The Enforcers!

The tanks spread out and their - two on either side of the lead on containing Sergeant Talon - and their dual-gunned turrets swing around to aim at Shard.

TALON
Enforcers, move in!

T-BONE
(over the radio)
Bad move! You don't know what this guy can do!

The Enforcers ignore him and open fire as they drive forward! The tanks open fire, pelting Shard with their lasers. But they just bounce harmlessly off his crystal body like everything else has so far. The Sergeant's hard set mouth sours into a frown. Shard laughs.

SHARD
That tickles!

Talon's expression changes from one of indifferent confidence to one of troubled caution as he signals for advance to halt and the tanks to stop firing. The Turbokat roars overheard.

RAZOR
(over)
Guess he's tougher than BOTH thought, huh, Sergeant?

Sergeant Talon's frown deepens. He turns and addresses his tanks corps.

TALON
Hit him again! Harder! All at once!
(raises his arm, then swipes it down)
Now!

The Peacekeepers blast away. Still this accomplishes nothing. Shard roars in annoyance at their redoubled attack.

SHARD
When are you fools gonna wise up?!

Now Talon is beginning to worry a little, but like everything he does, it is reserved. When he speaks, it is calmly, but nevertheless urging swift action.

TALON
(into his helmet mic)
Retreat, men! Retreat!

The Peacekeepers begin backing up, but are too lethargic. Shard reaches down for the Peacekeeper closest to him, the one nearest to the lead tank on Talon's right. He watches in reserved horror as the enormous hand closes around it before the crew has had a chance to bail. The ordinarily unflappable Sergeant winces slightly as the hand simultaneously crunches the tank like a soda can and turns it to crystal, shattering it apart in his grasp. The tanks continue reversing. Talon unholsters his laser pistol and fires up at Shard's midsection. Shard swings his arm down at the lead tank. The Sergeant ducks down into the turret, pulling the hatch closed after him; the huge green hand just barely misses it, the turret pivoting and blasting away at the titan's legs.

After a moment, Talon reopens the hatch and peeks out. The earth shakes as Shard steps over his Peacekeeper, bringing one huge foot down towards the closest tank on the left. Crunch! This earns a gasp from the Sergeant. The next tank over swivels its turret 'round, but only manages to fire twice before an enraged Shard kicks it sky-high like a football. The vehicle goes sailing the air, hits the sand several yards off the highway and goes violently rolling across the dunes. When it finally stops, landing upside down, no one emerges from the rear hatch.

Now Shard returns to the two remaining tanks. When he lifts his foot off of the one he stepped on, it's revealed that it's been crushed flat. The final Peacekeeper besides Sergeant Talon's turns around completely and opens fire. The Enforcers are going to fight to the last. Observing this from the air, the SWAT Kats realize they need to intervene.

T-BONE
I warned 'em...
(he pushes the throttle forward)
Hang on!

The Turbokat dives down towards Shard as he walking at the tank that's shooting at him. In taking one of his gargantuan strides, his shadow falls over Talon's Peacekeeper. Afraid of being stepped on, Talon shouts down into the turret hatch at his unseen crew.

TALON
Forward, forward! Drive forward!

The tank lurches forward, but Shard passes over it harmlessly, so focused is he on the fifth tank pelting him with irritating laser fire. In the diving Turbokat, Razor opens fire with a combination of ordinary missiles and Slicer Missiles, which all blast apart over Shard multi-faceted bare back with zero effect, doing nothing to turn him from his murderous course. Luckily, as his huge hand approaches, its shadow falling over the tank, the dual guns stop firing and the hatch opens, and the the crew, two ENFORCER COMMANDOS, pop into view.

COMMANDO #1
Holy kats!

COMMANDO #2
Jump!

They both climb out and leap from the tank just as Shard grabs it, his palm crushing the open hatch lid down even as, with a flash, the entire tank is crystallized. Crushed hatch aside, this Peacekeeper is intact in its crystal form, and Shard's fingers curl around it, but instead of crushing it, he lifts it one-handed as the Turbokat roars past him. Snarling, he throws the tank after it, ignoring the two commandos, who race for safety. T-Bone easily dodges it and the brittle glittering tank breaks apart into multiple shards against the side of the mountain bordering the prison and the road. Shard flings some of his finger-spears at the retreating Turbokat. As before, T-Bone skillfully dodges all but the last one... and THIS one spears the jet's left wing!

T-BONE
Aaahhh! We're hit! Not enough power to maneuver!

Shard flings another round of his deadly projectiles, which T-Bone barely avoids, the Turbokat flying off in the direction of Megakat City.

T-BONE
Got to land this baby for repairs!

SHARD
Aw, come back and fight! You wimps!

Turning, he observes the final tank, Talon's, driving away from him, Talon facing backward in the open turret hatch, blasting away uselessly with his laser pistol.

SHARD
And this for YOU!

He forms and flings two of his crystalline spears, which speed towards the slowly moving Peacekeeper. Frowning, Talon once again ducks down inside of the turret, pulling the hatch cover closed after himself. Clang! The spear simultaneously bounces off the armored hatch cover and splinters apart into tiny shards, but the less heavily armored rear area of the Peacekeeper isn't as lucky; the second spear pierces it as easily as it had the Turbokat's wing, wrecking the engine. Smoke belching from the impaled rear, Sergeant Talon's Peacekeeper grinds to a halt on the spot.

Shard roars, takes a step towards the helpless tank, but then pauses, turning; the smoke trail left by the damaged Turbokat is still visible, but slowly dissipating. Frowning, he considers chasing them, but reconsiders it, turning and and heading down the road in the opposite direction, opting to go after Callie and Greenbox instead.

He leaves the Enforcers in ruins. As the giant's footsteps gradually recede, Talon opens the hatch of his stopped tank and peeks out cautiously before emerging fully.

TALON
(into his helmet mic)
Get me Commander Feral!

EXT. MEGAKAT DESERT - DAY

A lone Enforcer chopper flies through the air. Inside, COMMANDER FERAL is in the gunner's seat, an ENFORCER PILOT at the controls. Feral is currently on the radio.

FERAL
(into the radio)
This is Feral. What's the situation at the prison, Sergeant?

TALON:
(over the radio)
A lot worse than we thought! Shard is gigantic! He just trashed all my tanks! He even took out the SWAT Kats!

FERAL
(into radio)
What?! Where did he go?

TALON
(over radio)
Due west, I think.

Feral's eyes widen.

FERAL
That's in the direction of Megakat Springs! That's where Mayor Manx is!

He quickly switches frequencies on the radio.

FERAL
(into the radio)
Attention, all units! This is Feral! I want all available choppers to head to Megakat Springs, on the double!

EXT. DIAMOND MINE - DAY

The crystallized prison guard, Lem, is still standing upright near the mine entrance. The prison van has been completely turned to crystal since we last saw it. We can see the second guard, Talon, in the driver's seat because Shard broke the window glass. He's the same condition as his partner; turned to crystal, face eternally frozen in an expression of surprise and fear. Broken (ordinary) glass litters the area around the driver's side from where Shard broke the window. Everything else is the same.

Dr. Greenbox's green Jeep pulls up, Callie and Greenbox hopping out. Callie's still barefoot. They survey the scene before them.

GREENBOX
(grimly)
This is where it originated.

He runs into the mine. Callie gives the van a glance, then notices Lem. She approaches the crystallized Lem. Tentatively, she touches him, withdrawing her hand and backing up with a gasp as he wobbles a bit. This is her first real up close look at Shard's handiwork on another kat. She frowns. Even though Lem stops wobbling after a moment, the memory of Meece being shattered is still fresh in her mind. She steps up to the guard again and takes hold of him, grunting, tilting him backwards.

Greenbox emerges from the mine, the Gemkat 6000 in his hands. Or what's left of it, anyway. The entire side has been blown outward, and it's all twisted, blackened and burnt. He is horrified and enraged.

GREENBOX
(angrily under his breath)
It's broken beyond repair....!

He frowns at the ruin of his invention, then glances up at what Callie's doing. Still holding the device, Greenbox walks over as Callie has just finished gently laying the crystallized Lem on his back.

CALLIE
There... now he won't fall over and...

She trails over, a hitch in her throat cutting her off. Kneeling, balancing the Gemkat 6000 on his thigh, Greenbox lays a hand on Callie's shoulder. She adjusts her glasses, then spares the van (and Talon) another glance.

CALLIE
The other one in that van should be okay...

GREENBOX
(softly)
Come on, there's nothing else we can do for them. Not right now...

They stand up together and walk back over to the idling Jeep. Callie looks at the smashed Gemkat 6000.

CALLIE
Can you fix it?

GREENBOX
Not a chance!

He throws it roughly into the rear cargo area of the Jeep. Thunk! Clatter! But, climbing into the driver's seat and getting the wheel, he turns and looks at Callie standing beside the vehicle.

GREENBOX
But there's the always the original prototype back at Gemkat Labs!

CALLIE
Then what are we waiting for?

She runs around and climbs into the passenger's seat. Greenbox puts the pedal to the metal and zooms off.

EXT. MEGAKAT DESERT - DAY

Still trailing smoke, the damaged Turbokat plods through the sky, heading steadily further and further towards the ground. Specifically, the eastern dunes of the vast desert. In the cockpit, T-Bone strains, sweating, pulling up on the stick, trying with all his might to keep the jet aloft, but to no avail.

T-BONE
She's in a bad way, Razor! We're not gonna make it back to the hangar! I've got to set down right here before we crash!

Razor's got no complaints as the jet makes a somewhat bumpy crash-landing, coming to a gentle stop against one of the dunes. After the craft settles, the canopy pops open, Razor hopping out and hurrying back to inspect the damage. T-Bone leans out.

T-BONE
How's it look?

RAZOR
Not good.

He takes off his helmet.

RAZOR
It'll take at least a couple of hours to pull that shard out and fix the damage!

T-BONE
We don't have a couple of hours, buddy!

RAZOR
(solemnly)
I know...

Suddenly, Callie's voice comes over the radio.

CALLIE:
(over the radio)
SWAT Kats, come in!

T-BONE:
(into the radio)
This is T-Bone. What's happening, Ms. Briggs?

CALLIE:
(over the radio)
I may have the answer to our monster problem! An experimental diamond mining machine is what made Shard the way he is and caused all of this, and Dr. Greenbox is going to try to find a way to reverse it!

T-BONE:
(into the radio)
Great!
(blinks, confused)
Uh, who's Dr. Greenbox?

CALLIE
(over the radio)
Nevermind! We're heading to Gemkat Labs, and we may need you guys! It's on the other side of Megakat Springs, near the Megakat Canyon!

T-BONE
I'll be over there as soon as I can!

He hangs up, leaping from the cockpit.

T-BONE
Razor, I gotta run! Callie and some guy named Greenbox are trying to find a way to reverse that mineral maniac's shenanigans, and they need me over there.

Razor lifts the goggles from his eyes, sticking them up onto his forehead, deactivating the torch.

RAZOR
Greenbox? As in Leiter Greenbox? I think I've heard of him. Some hotshot inventor who just got a gig over at Gemkat Labs. Take the Sandkat! It should get you there in no time!

T-BONE
Right! Keep workin' on the Turbokat while I'm gone!

The rear portion of the Turbokat's undercarriage lowers down into a ramp. T-Bone hurries inside. We hear an engine start up. Vroom! A moment lalter, the burly SWAT Kats comes driving down the ramp on the Sandkat, a vehicle which is essentially a snowmobile but for the desert, or a version of the Cyclotron with the wheels replaced with heavy duty sand-eating rank treads, if you prefer. He stops at the bottom, pauses a moment to ensure his Glovatrix is in working order, then, giving a thumbs up to Razor, T-Bone rockets off across the sands on the Sandkat. Razor returns the thumbs-up and watches his friend depart, then lowers his goggles back down over his eyes and flicks the blowtorch back on. He gets back to work.

EXT. MEGAKAT SPRINGS - DAY

Lush establishing shot of the town of Megakat Springs, a small desert suburb outside of Megakat City, so named because of its proximity to a large lake created by an underground reservoir. Seen from above, it is a jewel in the middle of the otherwise barren Megakat Desert. The golf course is visible off to one side. It's mid-afternoon. Ominously, a cloud passes in front of the sun so that a creeping, dark shadow seems to slowly be enveloping the town. Push in on the town slowly.

EXT. MEGAKAT SPRINGS - MAIN STREET

Hustle and bustle as various TOWNSFOLK go about their business. The town's main street is lined with eclectic and tasteful-looking little shops and diners. The usual light afternoon traffic is on the streets, but most people who actually live here take the bus or go everywhere on foot, Megakat Springs' size allowing for a far less harried daily lifestyle than Megakat City. There's the Scrumptious Family Bakery, a combination restaurant and high-end bakery, and directly across the street, as though on purpose, is an Enforcer substation, a small Enforcer headquarters for policing the smaller areas on the outskirts of Megakat City. A Enforcer cruiser sits parked outside.

There's only a single ENFORCER SERGEANT on duty in the whole town, seen emerging from the bakery, a real Barney Fife type, enjoying an éclair and reading a folded open magazine as he carelessly jaywalks, an expensive-looking convertible stopping gently to avoid hitting him, the driver, an OLD LADY, honking at him good-naturedly and shaking her head. He doesn't even acknowledge it. Managing to get across the street without further incident, the sergeant enters the substation.

The old lady's convertible drives down Main Street, towards the ritzier part of town, past all the stores and motels. Zooming up behind her is Dr. Greenbox's green Jeep. The inventor honks the horn at the slowly-moving convertible, then swerves into the opposite land to go around it. An oncoming pickup nearly hits him. Callie, in the passenger's seat, yelps, the pickup swerving at the last second and winding up skidding to a halt up on the sidewalk. The DRIVER leans out and shakes his fist at the departing Jeep. Greenbox turns back into the right lane and smiles apologetically to Callie and steps on the gas, zooming through the town.

PAN past the vehicle, up over the rooftops to:

EXT. MEGAKAT SPRINGS - GOLF COURSE

A luxurious golf course for the super-rich, with sprawling greens and a clubhouse that looks like it's a mansion. A sign posted near the clubhouse reads "Manx Invitational Golf Tournament." In the parking lot, Mayor Manx's chauffeur stands dutifully by the limo like a statue. Off to one side on a private helipad sits the Kat's Eye News chopper. AL the pilot is busy cleaning the helicopter's windshield, completely disinterested in what's going on.

Mayor Manx, in his golfing clothes, stands on the green with his sleepy-eyed CADDY, along with several other GOLFERS and ANN GORA. Along with JONNY K., Ann is here to cover the tournament, and she doesn't look very happy about it. There is a very small crowd of uninterested-looking SPECTATORS, including a BRATTY LITTLE KID who is apparently unaccompanied.

ANN
(talking softly)
This is Ann Gora of Kat's Eye News, reporting live from Megakat Springs, as the honorable Mayor Manx prepares to make the last putt on the last hole of his own tournament.

She pauses to yawn as Jonny turns and aims the camera at Manx.

ANN
(grumbling now that the camera is off of her)
Ugh, this has got to be the most boring day of my career.

Manx puts a ball on the tee, and prepares to swing, when the ground shakes, causing the ball to fall off. Confounded, he puts it back on, but another tremor makes it fall again.

MANX
Aah! My golf ball's possessed!

Again, he returns the ball to the tee. Another tremor rocks the earth and the crowd begins murmuring. This time, as Manx swings, he slices, creating a huge divot and sending the ball flying over the heads of the assembled crowd. It whizzes past Ann and Jonny and splooshes into a water hazard. Manx is enraged, staring angrily at the clump of earth and grass clinging to the head of the club. He mutters unintelligibly to himself as he uses one white-gloved thumb to clean it off, waving away the caddy who offers him a handkerchief.

MANX
If nobody minds... I'll be taking that shot over.

The crowd groans. The other golfers glower.

MANX
(defensive)
It IS MY tournament, after all...

He reaches into his pocket for another golf ball and tee. Suddenly, Shard appears over the treetops nearby as Hizzoner is bending down to stick the tee into the ground and place the ball on it. The assembled spectators notice him first, the one bratty-looking little boy first of all. He yelps and points.

BRATTY LITTLE KID
I don't! B-But I think HE does!

They scream and run, including the kid. Manx, his caddy and the other golfers look up, then turn and flee in terror, Manx dropping the golf ball. It rolls off across the green. Ann and Jonny stand their ground, looking up at the crystalline giant. Jonny's got his camera aimed right at him!

ANN
Wow! Come on, Jonny, let's get to the chopper!

Al's already inside and firing up the rotors. They turn and run towards the chopper as Shard's thundering stroll comes to an abrupt halt on the green. He looks bigger now, subtly changed from the last time we saw him, as though he's actually growing!

SHARD
A golf course, huh? Mind if I... "play through?"

Meanwhile, the Kat's Eye News chopper lifts off from the ground, Ann and Jonny inside, as Commander Feral arrives on the scene in his personal chopper from earlier. Manx, already lagging behind the fleeing crowd, stops and waves his hands in the air, one holding his golf club, as he tries to get Feral's attention.

MANX
Feral! You've got to do something!

Noticing him, Feral gets on his chopper's P.A. system.

FERAL
(over the P.A.)
Don't worry, Mr. Mayor! The Enforcers are here!

Manx and Shard hear rumbling engines as a group of about eight Enforcer Peacekeepers comes rolling through the trees surrounding the golf course, spreading out in a circle to surround Shard, their treads tearing up the perfectly-mowed green turf. It's a tossup as to whether Manx is more horrified by the giant monster or by the damage being done to the green!

MANX
Not that! Oh, not the beautiful Megakat Springs Golf Course!

He melodramatically falls to his knees and hits the ground with his club in rage and despair. After a moment, Manx gets up, and, in a mindless panic, runs not for the clubhouse parking lot but to a golf cart that's closer, flinging the golf club away as he goes, screaming in pure terror and holding on to his hat (and the toupee underneath!). Ignoring him, the Enforcer tanks close in on Shard, who looks wary but unafraid.

SHARD
The Enforcers again? I guess you still haven't learned your lesson!

FERAL
(over the P.A.)
All tanks, open fire! Blast that thing!

They dutifully obey. More of the same, as the Enforcers' lasers just harmlessly pelt Shard. He growls.

SHARD
I'm starting to get annoyed!

Shard stoops down amidst the laser fire bouncing off of his hide, his crystal hand slamming into the grass. He laughs evilly. Another "wave" of crystal shoots out across the course, crystallizing the attacking Peacekeepers and the retreating golfers and spectators as they attempt to flee. Manx's caddy is zapped and turned to crytsal, and so are his chauffeur and limo, and the clubhouse. Manx himself is likewise unable to outrun the wave. He looks back over his shoulder as he putters along in his golf cart, screams, presses the pedal down harder as if that'll make the cart go faster, and then the wave hits him, and he's crystallized, golf cart and all, grinding to a halt. Only Feral in his chopper and Ann, Jonny and Al in theirs escape. Ann and Jonny watch from the news chopper, Jonny's camera aimed down at the chaos below.

ANN
(in awe)
Jonny, are you getting this?

JONNY
I'm getting it, I'm getting it!

Cackling, Shard ignores the hovering helicopters He grunts and strains. There's a flash of light. Those in the choppers shield their eyes.

SHARD
Let's see what I can REALLY do!

The spread of the crystallization extends beyond the golf course.

EXT. MEGAKAT SPRINGS - MAIN STREET

Cars screech to a halt as they see the advancing, glittering transformation approaching. People emerge from shops and homes. The lone Enforcer sergeant on duty in the substation emerges, éclair held in his mouth, magazine in one hand, the other on the butt of his holstered laser pistol, having caught some of what's going on over at the golf course via the Enforcer band in the station. He and the other surprised citizens of Megakat Springs have no time to register the sight of the gigantic Rex Shard looming over the rooftops in the direction of the golf course before the "wave" strikes them. Whoosh! They're instantly frozen in place in a perfect tableau of small town life rendered in sparkling diamond. Soon, all of Megakat Springs is one big crystalline wasteland. Now, the town is a literal jewel in the middle of the desert...

EXT. MEGAKAT SPRINGS - GOLF COURSE

As Shard cackles, Commander Feral gawks at what has become of Megakat Springs. In a rage, he fires everything he's got at the monster. Lasers, rockets, bombs. They explode uselessly against Shard's chest. Shard forms a big sharp crystal projectile, and flings it directly at the lone Enforcer who remains yo defy him. It pierces the nose of the chopper, and Feral yells as it jams between up between his legs, stopping mere inches from hitting his stomach. The helicopter spirals out of control, but Feral manages to make a halfway decent crash-landing on the crystallized golf course.

SHARD
Now then, I've still got to pay ol' Greenbox a visit! I just hope I'm headin' in the right direction...

Shard turns and stomps off, the Kat's Eye News chopper tailing him. Feral climbs out of his own wrecked chopper with a groan, his walkie-talkie in hand.

FERAL
(into the radio)
Ugh, this is Feral. I need chopper backup!

EXT. GEMKAT LABS - DAY

A two-story, high-tech looking facility which resembles a fortified military bunker, erected at the base of a cliff. The green Jeep sits parked outside.

INT. GEMKAT LABS - LAB

This is Dr. Greenbox's personal lab at the facility. Lots of clutter and machine parts, diagrams and blueprints, a chalkboard cover in indecipherable mathmetical equations. One of the things drawn on the chalkboard is a spherical device identified by nearly illegible writing as a "micro-brain repair orb." The place is deserted. Callie and Greenbox are the only ones there. Greenbox is at a worktable near a window overlooking the front of the building. The junked final model of the Gemkat 6000 sits to one side; the focus of the inventor's attention is a somewhat larger and bulkier prototype device. He currently has the side taken off and is using a soldering gun to futz around with its inner workings, frowning in concentration. Still barefoot, Callie paces around the room, impatient and anxious.

CALLIE
Where is everybody...?

GREENBOX
They probably evacuated after what happened at Megakat Springs.

He glances up and out the window. In the distance, the crystalline skyline of the distant town can be made out. He frowns and returns to work. After sifting through some papers and failing to make sense of them, whether because of the technical jargon or because of Greenbox's messy handwriting, Callie goes over to where the scientist is working.

CALLIE
So what exactly was going on with Meece?

Greenbox doesn't look up, but there is an obvious pause before he answers.

GREENBOX
I don't know what you're talking about.

CALLIE
(pressing)
Don't lie to me, Greenbox. I know you and he were up to something. Not all the diamond money was going to the prison and you knew about it.

GREENBOX
(sighs)
Fine.

He stops his work and turns to her, still holding the soldering gun.

GREENBOX
Meece was sending the diamonds to dealers, like he said, but he was keeping nearly all the money for himself, spending hardly a dime on the prison. And I was in on it.
(pauses)
B-By accident, you see. I wasn't supposed to know. But after he contracted Gemkat Labs to build the mining machine, I found out accidentally, and he offered me a cut of the profits he was keeping stashed in his private safe to keep quiet about it. And I took it.

CALLIE
Why?

Greenbox sets the soldering tool down and leans on the worktable with both hands, hanging his head slightly.

GREENBOX
Gemkat Labs wasn't paying me quite what I'd hoped, and I wanted to start my own private lab in the city.

Lifting his head, he turns and gestures towards the various bits and bobs and diagrams throughout the room.

GREENBOX
I have a lot of non-geological-related invention ideas that Gemkat refused to fund.

He makes a fist, scowling.

GREENBOX
Only with a cut of Meece's money would I have been able to--

Callie raises a hand, silencing him.

CALLIE
Save it. If Shard doesn't get you, you're looking at some serious jail time, Greenbox.

Looking guilty, he fiddles with the device some more, before smiling. He snaps the side compartment shut and holds the prototype up.

GREENBOX
I got it! It's rewired. Now, it should reverse everything back to normal. Starting with--

SHARD
(from outside)
Greenbox!

The two turn and see the glittering figure of the giant Rex Shard approaching from the distance!

SHARD
(roaring)
I gotta talk to you!

CALLIE
Let's go!

She grabs the device and takes Greenbox's arm and they run from the room.

EXT. GEMKAT LABS - DAY

The two of them come running out the door, Callie holding the Gemkat 6000 prototype. Greenbox is finishing up a hasty explanation of how to use it.

GREENBOX
...and that lever there activates it! The beam should turn Shard and everything he's touched back to normal!

They skid a halt and look up, mouths agape. From their point of view we see the giant Rex Shard standing over them!

SHARD
Goin' someplace?

They gasp. Shard squats down and grins evilly. Is it just the angle or does he look even bigger than he did back at the golf course? Greenbox swallows nervously.

SHARD
I didn't think so. Like I said, Doc, we got some unfinished business from back at the prison, you and I...

GREENBOX
No! A hundred times no! I won't help you control your powers! They're not some magic toy to be used whenever you want!

He shakes, balling up his fists, struggling to find the courage to stand up to the towering villain.

GREENBOX
Especially not by someone like you!

SHARD
(pretending to be wounded)
And what's wrong with me?

CALLIE
(stepping forward)
You're a bully and a criminal and a murderer!

Shard eyes her. Her defiance is enraging him. The sight of the rewired prototype enrages him further. He lifts a finger for emphasis.

SHARD
Y'know, Deputy Mayor, you got a big mouth... I knew I shoulda taken care of you back at the prison!

He reaches down with thumb and forefinger in a "pinching" motion as though to grab her. She screams and backs up, only for a terrified by still determined-looking Greenbox to rush between them.

GREENBOX
No! I won't let you!

The inventor's intrusion is so sudden that Shard grabs him between his thumb and forefinger instead! There's a flash of light. Callie winces and looks away.

SHARD
No!

He releases Greenbox instantly, but it's too late! Opening her eyes, Callie cries out at the sight of the scientist who just sacrificed himself for her standing there as a glittering crystal "statue" of himself, feet planted firmly on the ground, knees slightly bent, arms spread out, palms toward Shard in a frozen pose of protection, as if even if his crystallized state, he is shielding Callie from harm. The Deputy Mayor is visibly moved by the sacrifice of the scientist she'd just dismissed as a good-for-nothing criminal, and upset.

CALLIE
D-Dr. Greenbox! No!

Shard, for his part, rises, grabbing the sides of his head, moaning in despair, Callie and the prototype momentarily forgotten.

SHARD
No, no, noooooooo! Not Doc Greenbox! Now who's gonna help me figure out how to control my powers?!

Taking this opportunity, Callie runs between Shard's legs towards the Jeep parked a few feet away. The keys are in the ignition. She's mere feet from it when... wham! One of Shard's giant feet slams down between it and her, cutting her off. Callie quakes in terror, alone with this giant crystalline monstrosity leering down at her.

SHARD
How come you're runnin' off, Ms. Briggs? I thought they said diamonds were a girl's best friend.

Callie slowly stops shaking and screws up her courage, working the charging lever on the Gemkat 6000.

CALLIE
(angry)
I don't like the setting!

She fires. The beam shoots up and hits Shard... and does nothing! She gasps, eyes widening.

SHARD
Nice try, lady. Now... just hold still and this won't hurt a teensy, weensy bit...

His gigantic hand reaches down for her!
