Well, I don’t think you’ve missed a beat
I really enjoyed this story as it teased the notion of the SWAT Kats’ initial motivations being less than altruistic in their pursuit of… not quite revenge, but definitely some kind of comeuppance in those they view as having wronged them.
I really appreciate the characters' use of their own internal logic to justify their actions, particularly this line:
The characters, Jake in particular, are portrayed with a great deal of nuance and deliberate imperfection, which made this a nice little read. And, the explanation of the “unresolved” elements, including their design choices was a fun back-and-forth. Even Feral gets his moment in this story, which was a nice peak into an event that was no doubt viewed differently by those involved.
The idea you present of them being motivated to become vigilantes over a sense of vindication, and then through time, experience and maturity, transitioning that into a sense of duty was a great theme to explore (and is coincidentally pretty much how I view those two).
A lot of the motif and tones present in
Masks seem to carry over into this particular work, and I can’t help but wonder if perhaps you see this as an introduction to the continuity of your series?

Will be posting feedback to other stories, too.
